Visiting Petrópolis

Last June my family and I went to Petrópolis with Sara's school (her friends and her teacher). Sara is my niece and she's seven years old. We went by bus and we stayed there only one day. Sara met her friends and her teacher at school in the morning. We arrived at Sara's school at about 7.30 a.m. and we took a bus at about 8 a.m.

In Petrópolis we had a very good time. During the day we visited many places and we also walked around the city. We saw The Santos Dumont's House. It has many high stairs. We went to the Crystal Palace and Quitandinha Hotel, too. It has a very beautiful architecture.

At midday we went to a small restaurant. It was comfortable and the food was delicious. The children ate a lot and they played there very much. My mother, my sister-in-law and I had lunch together. Sara had lunch with her friends near us. After lunch we saw the famous Imperial Museum. It was The Royal Family's House. Our excursion was excellent because it wasn't very cold. My family always love Petrópolis because it is a special city and the people are very friendly and polite. I think Petrópolis is a wonderful city. We went sightseeing a lot but we didn't buy anything. I bought three pairs of earrings and one necklace. My mother bought a necklace, too. Sara and her mother bought chocolate and cookies.

We took a lot of photos. In the afternoon we went back to Santa Cruz da Serra. We arrived there at about 5 p.m. We didn't have problems and we had a great time.

On Mondays I start school at 1.50 p.m. The first subject is Maths, I hate it. After Maths, I have an English class. I love English, but after English I have an Art class, it's so boring and I can't stand my teacher.

My school subjects are very nice (some). I take 13 school subjects but in the UK there are 20. I don't study PSE, French, German, Technology, Drama, RE, but the others I do.

I like so much my school because of my friends, some teachers, the girls (so much!) and the food. But I don't like some teachers, the director, some people and the Maths and Art classes.

I always go to school at 12.30 p.m. On Monday my four subjects are: Portuguese, Physics, Spanish and Biology. My classes finish at 6.50 p.m.

Some subjects that the people in the UK study, but here in Brazil I do not have: German, Drama, French or Citizenship.

Some of the things that I like in my school are my teachers and the class, but one thing that I do not like is the classrooms because they are too small.

My typical school day is very funny for me. On Monday I start school at 11.40 a.m. and finish at 5 p.m. At 11.40 a.m. I have Biology, at 1.20 p.m. I have English, at 3 p.m. I have a break, after the break I have P.E. at 4.10 p.m. and I finish school at 5 p.m.

Monday is my favourite school day because the subjects are my favourite ones.

In the UK there are many different subjects than in my school: Drama, French, RE, Citizenship, German, Cookery, etc.

In my school I don't like the uniform, the Geography and Art teachers, but I like my friends, etc.

Clara's bedroom

In my room, I've got a white desk with two chairs of different colours: pink and blue. That's where I study. In my desk there is a white lamp, a lot of photos and books.

My sister and I sleep in the same room. My bedroom has two beds and two wardrobes. I've got two bookshelves where I put my photos and my magazines.

The window is very big, the curtains are pink and the carpets are pink, too. I can look at the ceiling and see my ventilator.

I've got a bed, a black lamp and an alarm clock. I've got a brown desk with a white chair. That's where I do my homework.

I've got a brown chest of drawers, and five bookshelves, for my CD-player, my MP3 player, my DVD player, my magazines and my school books.

The window is large and the curtains are white, green and red. I don't have a carpet because I have an allergy to it. My walls are almost lilac.

My bedroom's got a cold floor, so I wear socks. The walls are blue and the ceiling is white.

In my room, there is a wardrobe, a computer, a TV, a video-game, a bed, my two guitars, my games, my school books and a special wall with metallic paint, where I put my fridge magnet.

This is my favourite room because I can do everything I want. Without it, I don't live. I love my bedroom and my things, too.

Last month I went to Hollywood with my girlfriend, Nelly Furtado. We travelled by private jet. We stayed at Beyonce's house, it was very comfortable and we stayed there for seven days. I went to the Oscar presentation and I met a lot of stars. Unfortunately, my film didn't get the Oscar. I didn't have a great time but I got a lot of gifts from Nelly.

Party of the Bonfim (Lavagem do Bonfim)

The Party of the Bonfim or “Lavagem do Bonfim” is a religious celebration that takes place in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. It happens on the second Thursday after the Epiphany, in the month of January. Teodósio Rodrigues de Faria, an officer of the Portuguese Army, brought from Lisbon an image of Christ, which, in 1745, was taken with great accompaniment to the church of Penha, in Itapagipe. The party begins in the morning with a traditional parade of women dresses in typical clothes (Baianas) from the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Praia, and then they wash with brooms and perfumed water the staircases of the Church of Nosso Senhor do Bonfim. This annually congregates thousands of loyal officers in search of the protection of perfumed waters to cleanse the body and the soul. This party is very important for the people in Bahia, and they show the faith that they have in Nosso Snhor do Bonfim.

Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos)

The Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) is an ancient Aztec celebration in memory of deceased ancestors, celebrated on November 1 (All Saints' Day) and November 2 (All Souls' Day).
The holiday is especially popular in Mexico, where it is a national holiday, and is celebrated in the Philippines, in Mexican-American communities in the United States, and to a lesser extent in other Latin American countries.
Plans for the festival are made throughout the year, including gathering the goods to be offered to the dead. During the period of October 31 and November 2, families usually clean and decorate the graves. Most visit the cemeteries where their loved ones are buried and decorate their graves with ofrendas, or offerings, which often include orange marigold called Flor de Muerto, Spanish for "flower of the dead". Toys are brought for dead children (los angelitos, or little angels), and bottles of tequila, mezcal, pulque or atole for adults.
A common symbol of the holiday is the skull (colloquially called calavera), which celebrants represent in masks, called calacas (colloquial term for "skeleton"), and foods such as sugar skulls, which are inscribed with the name of the recipient on the forehead. Sugar skulls are gifts that can be given to both the living and the dead. Other holiday foods include pan de muerto (or "bread of the dead"), a sweet egg bread made in various shapes, from plain rounds to skulls and rabbits often decorated with white frosting to look like twisted bones.
The day of the Dead is a happy day.

I've read some very good books recently. The most interesting book I've read recently was "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix", by J.K. Rowling. But the best book I've ever read was "Harry Potter and thr Goblet of Fire", by J.K. Rowling. I haven't been to the cinema recently, and the last film I saw was "Mission: Impossible III". I liked it, but the best film I've ever seen was "White Chicks", and the worst film was "A nightmare on Elm Street". I've bought some good CDs recently and I particularly like "Confessions on a dancefloor" by Madonna. I've never been to a live concert, but I'd love to do go one.

The students Deborah and Natasha wrote about their favourite TV programme. Deborah loves The failry oddparents and Natasha is addicted to Lost.

Student: Deborah

My favourite TV programme is The fairly oddparents. It’s a cartoon. It’s on channel 4 on terrestrial TV, but you can also see it on satellite and cable TV on Disney Channel, Jetix and Nickelodeon. I watch it everyday at night.

The main location is a city called Dimmsdale. The events take place in the school, the main characters' house and in the Fairly World.

The characters are Timmy Turner, the boy who has the fairly oddparents, his parents, Mom and Timmy’s Dad, the fairly oddparents Cosmo and Wanda, Crocker the bad teacher, Vicky the evil baby sitter and Timmy’s friends AJ and Chester.

My favourite characters are Cosmo and Timmy’s Dad. I love Cosmo because he’s very stupid and he’s very funny. Also, Timmy’s Dad because he has the worst job and he always tries to make Timmy happy.

The main theme is about a boy who has magic powers to help him and to fulfill his wishes. It’s a very funny cartoon.

It’s my favourite programme because it makes me laugh a lot with the things that Cosmo says and his actions. Also, because I love Timmy Turner, who is a distant cousin of Will Turner, the pirate, and I love Timmy’s pink cap.

My favourite TV programme is Lost. It’s an adventure series and it’s from the USA. Lost is on channel 4 Globo, but you can also see it on satellite and cable TV on channel ABC and AXN. I used to watch it on Globo every day at 10 p.m. but now it’s over on this channel and I just watch it when my friend downloads from the internet and lends me the DVD.

The main location is in an unknown island. The main characters are: Kate, Jack, Charlie, Sawyer, Michael, Sayid, Jin, Sun, John Lock, Walt, Desmond, Hugo (Hurley), Mr. Eko and the dog Vicent. There were some other characters , but they died in the first season of the programme.

My favourite character is Vicent because he is the most mysterious and the most intelligent one.
The main theme of Lost is about the difficulty that the people, who fell in a desert island, have to survive and runaway from there.

This is my favourite programme because this is a mixture of drama, adventure, romance, mistery and comedy. It is the recipe for the best progamme for me.
